Ludwigsburg International Classrooms (LICs)

Ludwigsburg University of Education is an international institution and encourages exchange and cooperation with its international partners, be they universities, faculty or students. We would like to strengthen the international dimension of teaching. Thus, we have started "Ludwigsburg International Classrooms", which is a guest lectureship programme. As part of the programme we invite faculty members from our partner institutions to teach a short-term course in Ludwigsburg.

What? Teaching a short-term course of 28 semester hours at LUE (1 week)
Remuneration Stipend + free accommodation either in one of our guest apartments on campus or a hotel room nearby. Depending on the availability of the apartment or the hotel, you can also bring your family along.

Which subjects? No restriction. LUE encourages applications in the field of History, Geography, Mathematics, Political Sciences, Music Studies, and Physical Education since we run a bilingual teacher training programme that prepares students to teach those subjects in English.

Who? Faculty members/teaching staff from our partner universities in anglophone countries

When? May 21st - May 24th 2024 (so-called excursion week) or International Teaching Week October 7th - October 11th 2024

Deadline? The Call for Applications is open until January 15th 2024 for teaching stays in May and until March 30th 2024 for October 2024: This programme is funded jointly by LUE (International Office) and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science and Arts.

How many students would be involved?
There is no official number, but it depends upon the lecturer’s course subject and plan and the students’ interest. Some courses are more efficient in smaller groups, then we would limit them to 20/25 students. Other courses have more of a lecture mode, which means we would not give it any limitation. This can be discussed during the preparation phase and will be adjusted individually. According to our internal guidelines, however, we should see that at least 10 students enroll.

How many hours of instruction would I need to deliver?
The official number of hours is 28 SWS (“Semesterwochenstunden”) which means 14 sessions, each session lasting 1½ hours. That means there should be a total of 21 full clock hours. However, course preparation may be included in this amount.

What are the learning outcomes that would need to be achieved?
These really depend on the structure and topic of the course. In the end it is you who determines the outcome.

What software platform do your students use?
We use Moodle but also have experience in transferring content to Moodle. Once you are registered as a guest lecture in our system, you will receive access to the platform, which you can use to set up your course. You have the chance to upload material, open discussion forums, creating a space for students to upload their work, which you can then also comment on. For help and support you can contact us anytime.

Besides instruction, would I have other commitments?
There are no other commitments. Once we know that you have decided to teach (online), we will contact the host department so that they can promote the offer to their students. In general, guest lecturers do not have any obligations with regard to graded credits.

How do the students receive their credits for the seminar?
A list of successful participants should be handed in to the International Office on completion of the course. We would kindly ask you not to provide credit to individual students.

How much is the stipend?
The stipend for a full (21-hour) course is 952 EUR (approximately 1,043 US $). The financial conditions for classroom and online teaching are the same.
We will provide you with a document to write down the hours you spend on the course (preparation and conducting the course). You would need to hand in a timetable that shows when teaching/preparation took place. Your stipend will be paid by bank transfer into your home account. These amounts may be subject to taxation in accordance with German taxation regulations, but this has not been the case so far.

How can I access the internet?
Upon your arrival, you will receive a personal internet account. With that you can log onto eduroam while on campus and if you are staying in one of the one-room apartments. If you are in the big apartment, you will find another WIFI code to log on.

What is the technical equipment like in the seminar rooms?
Every room is equipped with a beamer and a computer. You can either log onto the computer or plug in your own laptop to show a presentation, for example. If you have copies to be made, it would be best to send the documents to us before your course begins. In this way we can make the copies before your arrival and things will run smoother once the seminar starts. Should you need any other sort of technical equipment, please let us know.

Can I bring my family?
We would love to get to know your family and to have them here as well. As mentioned in the question: “Where do I live?”, we can offer you a bigger apartment or a hotel room. If you are interested in this apartment or a hotel room for your family, please let us know. In this way we can check whether it is available during the time of your stay. The cost for your stay will be covered by the International Office. Though we would kindly ask you to take over the costs for your family.

Where do I live?
We can offer our guest either a one-room apartment or our guest apartment which has 3 bedrooms and space for at least 4 guests. This is especially interesting for guests that would like to bring their family or partner. Both apartments are located only a 5-minute walk from the campus and a 2-minute walk to the train station. Supermarkets are close by and there is a big park for nice walks just around the corner. Moreover, if the apartments are already booked out, we can offer to book you a hotel room for yourself or you and your family.

How do I get to the campus?
If you travel by plane and land in Stuttgart, we put together a little travel guide which will help you to find your way. Of course you can also always use Google Maps. Before you come to Germany, download the map of Ludwigsburg and the surrounding area (preferably also Stuttgart) in the app. In this way you can use it for directions even though you don’t have internet access. If you land anywhere else or arrive by bus and need some help with directions, please let us know. We are always more than happy to help.
